Reforging in WoW Cataclysm
Written by WoW Cataclysm.
World of Warcraft Cataclysm will introduce a new ability to professions that let them improve the stats on gear. Because simply adding new stats to gear would have made certain professions in too high a demand, Blizzard has decided to let crafters for most professions simply taken 50% of a certain stat on an item, and then put another stat on there for that same amount. This should allow for much more item customization possibilities in WoW Cataclysm. Here is some more info:
- This new Reforging mechanic is added to most production professions.
- Blacksmithing – Will change Plate armor and weapons
- Engineering – Will change Ranged weapons and trinkets
- Jewelcrafting – Will change Jewelry (rings, necklaces)
- Leatherworking – Will change Leather armor
- Tailoring – Will change Cloth armor
- Reforging will allow you to reduce one of the current stats on an item by 50% and place those points into another stat.
- The new stat cannot already be on the item; you can’t reduce stamina to add additional strength, but you can reduce stamina to add hit rating to the item, for example.
Reforging in WoW Cataclysm will allow the masters of these professions much more work on a daily basis, and should bring in some money to these expensive to develop professions. Players get yet another avenue to customize their characters. Sounds like a win-win to me.

sounds fantastic, and would certainly allow for some of the Tier gear to be best utilised, effectively best-in-slot will be gone, and your gear set up will be unique to your play style – all i can say to that is FANTASTIC!
Indeed….FAN-TASTIC
this makes it much more worthwhile to take on a crafting profession (enchantments were the first step to that imo) and we should see a much more diversified profession population (instead of a hundred enchanters and jewel crafters running around LFW)
What about mail armor?
Mail armor is in the same teir as leatherworking
ive been an alchemist for 4 years and have about every single recipie give or take a couple faction ones and drops but with this proffesion im thinking (as a rogue who raids end game and pvps) of switching to LW and JC to get the full benifits of LW enchants and JC gems as well as reforging. Unless i here a huge change to alchemy where its worth keeping im still in a limbo on what im going to do.
Um…what about alchemy, inscription? Isn’t it a bit unfair that they can’t reforge anything?
Finally! i can have my Melee Warlock again! My T10 Equivalent productions will get STR and AGI! MWAHAHAHA!
What about Inscription? Scribes make offhand items, and it doesn’t look like those are claimed yet – why not let us reforge them?
Can you only ‘Reforge’ your own items?
sucks u decrease stam for other stats?
bad 4 tanks
Ross, take away the str/int and place into stam, or vice versa.
Casters will generally do that with something like stam or agil, swapped out for Int most commonly.
Fairly easy to follow :3
@Deathnyct:
You wont be able to change a stat to an already existing stat m8. so casters wont be able to change stam into int (most likely) since their gear already holds intellect. BUT for example, you could change 50% of the stamina to crit chance if you flet like you already have more than enough of stam.
This is awesome for ninja looters
as a rogue you can need stuff with lots of int and say you really need it b/c you gonna reforge it into strenght!
that would be agi. ^
strenght would be better for kittydr00ds
Sounds like another bonanza for guild subsidized crafters and a screwing for everyone else. nothing to see here , move along peons. good thing that AH farming is still lucrative )
One word…. LAME!!!
How will blizzard prevent ninja’s and will the crafters be able to make new recipes? Is that what that is? Or will anyone be able to swap stats on their gear… I’m thinking its the 1st one but that leaves out tier gear adjustments… just.find what works… y do ppl gotta be lazy? I wonder how Rawr will work after this whole change.. ok well.
I am really pleased with the new expansion cept about this one feature… I honestly hope it doesn’t affect me getting the gear I want/need. IE if someone let’s say rolled on my cloak outta RS 25 man heroic I would be passes if it was too a rogue or something… but in the switch side, I guess I could always take what on their wishlist if I didn’t.mind sacrificing half my stats…
Which brings me to another point, what about stats that are more valuable than others?
Few typos in there… my phone likes to change things ….
well this should be rather interesting. since they are condensing and taking away some of the customization in the talent tress, they decided to add it to the proffessions? i may have to re-roll some proffs. i know one of my friends put tailoring on his death knight because he wanted to make/sell tons of bags. my question is that if he keeps tailoring, he can reforge tailoring items. does this make them soulbound? if it does not, does that mean that he could have, say a blacksmith friend, reforge his tier gear for him? its just a lil undescriptive and confusing to me i guess.
You guys are way off point here. Why would a rogue take a caster piece of gear? Even with reforging, they are left with 50% of the int and spirit on the gear, and gain 50% agility. this is a horrible trade of for them
Yea I dont think many of you quite get it… look in patch notes 4.0.1 for a better understanding…
“Players can now visit special Reforging NPCs in capital cities located near Enchanting trainers. 40% of any one secondary stat on an item can be allocated to add a new secondary stat to the item. The stat being added cannot already exist on the item. An item cannot have more than one reforged stat at a time, though the Reforging of an item can be undone and changed.
So the way this works is like so…
Lets say I’m lacking hit, just short of the hit cap, and swapping out pieces of my gear isnt working for me. Lets also say I have alot of Str on a piece of armor with NO hit at all… I can swap 40% of the Str on that item with 40% hit and reach the hit cap I need. If I end up getting a new piece of gear with hit on it later that I can use, I can reforge that same piece back to what it was.
This basically just gives items more flexibility in terms of what stats you need right now as opposed to what stats are actually on your gear right now.
Get it?
@donkeykongjr upgrades are upgrades. maybe that piece of gear that has 50% more agi is an upgrade on a POS item they’re wearing…
So basically, every dps will reforge every item’s stamina into crit/haste/hit whatever… Oh yeah, so hard to make a choice
